So, I’m 50 today! Some thoughts and reflections

So, I’m 50 today!

Some thoughts and reflections on my 50th birthday:

I’ve been writing books professionally for 26 years. Still love it.

I’ve only ever had one guiding principle in my writing life: the next book has to be better than the one that came before it.

The novels I wrote in my 20s are not the same as the ones I wrote in my 30s or the ones I wrote in my 40s. Now in my 50s they’ll be different again, because I’ve grown.

Life affects what I write about. As I live more, I get more story ideas, especially character ideas.

Never ever ever listen to the naysayers. By trying something, having a go, you grow. They don’t.

Read what you love. Don’t try to impress others with your reading choices.

Be who you are. Fly your flag. Live your life. Go for it.

I’ve never been healthier than I am now.

My wife is amazing.

When you’re going through a good period in your life, try to recognize that — say “This is a great moment for me!” — and enjoy it in that moment because it may not last.

Writing a novel is satisfying on a solo level. Directing a movie is satisfying on a collaborative level. You also make more friends on movie sets.

The most sheer absolute fun I’ve ever had on one night was the night of the premiere of my movie INTERCEPTOR. It was a joyous evening for everyone who worked on it. I’ll never forget the cheers as the credits rolled.

I still don’t know how I wrote seven — seven! — Jack West novels. (Maybe it was all the coffee.)

DIE HARD is still my favourite movie.

A dog is a fantastic co-writer. (Dogs are awesome. Taylor Swift says cats are, too, but even at 50, I’ve never had a cat.)

So. A recommendation. I’m a big fan of Jonath

So. A recommendation.

I’m a big fan of Jonathan Nolan (the brother of Christopher). He may be the best writer working in Hollywood today.

I really liked his WESTWORLD: it was clever, twisty and took big swings.

I like FALLOUT even more. The world is much broader than WESTWORLD’s and he runs with it (FALLOUT is also a lot funnier, more whimsical, and it works). I watched the whole thing in a few days.

As a lover of good stories, I recommend you give this show a try.

This is actually pretty nice — these “overall” lists can be tricky (recency bias, classics, votes), so it’s great to see MR EINSTEIN’S SECRETARY make it.
