Having listened to the incredible Bob Dylan song 'The Hurricane' recently, I decided to go to the DVD store and rent the movie version of Ruben 'Hurricane' Carter's shocking tale (in 1966, he was jailed for life for murders that he did not commit, on flimsy evidence produced by racist cops and by an all-white jury; his was ultimately exonerated and freed after an equally enthralling story: a young black teenager, inspired by Carter's book about his life, gets his dogged Canadian guardians to re-open the Hurricane's case and they ultimately find exculpating evidence and get him freed).

It's strange, this movie came and went a few years ago without making much of an impact. I think Denzel Washington got an Oscar nomination, but it was not classified as a must-see movie.

I wonder why. Watching it the other day, I felt that schools should be showing this movie to their students . It's awesome.

Sure, it's a little slow in places, but the story is profound, and in many ways: it is about injustice, racism, nobility in the face of wrongful incarceration; and then (when you start to experience the story of the teenager and the Canadians becoming friends with the Hurricane, moving so they can live near his prison, and then doggedly pursuing his case), it becomes a tale of how even the smallest person can change the world, a tale about sheer determination, extreme loyalty, and just never giving up.

I loved it when the boy and the Canadians moved to the apartment within view of Hurricane Carter's prison, saying to him, "We're not leaving here until you leave here." Awesome stuff.

It'll be the best dollar you ever spent.
